uncertainty.

Where were you on 9/11, when the Twin Towers fell in a storm of fire and ash and concrete?

Where were you when the tsunami hit southeast Asia, just one day after Christmas? When two kids walked into Columbine High wielding guns? When a federal building in Oklahoma City was blown apart? A generation ago, the assassination of President Kennedy was the defining memory of an era. For this generation, it's the image of smoking buildings against the New York skyline.

Looking around the world today, it's hard to find comfort in what we see. The occasional triumphs of human kindness or generosity seem dwarfed by the problems we face. The internet and our increased global awareness show us a world filled with people plagued by hunger, disease, violence, and fear. Things happen that we can't possibly control or predict: earthquakes, wildfires, and human evil. The world gets more confusing and more unpredictable with each passing day.

Where is God in all of this?

Is God dead or gone, having long since abandoned the world He made? Many people argue just that--but world events in the last decade make it hard to take much comfort in the idea that "we're on our own." Or is God angry with us, using terrorism and natural disasters to punish people for their sin? There are plenty of people shouting that message as well--but it's hard to imagine a loving God angrily inflicting these horrors on entire countries, without concern for the innocent and without even telling us why He's doing it.

Is there another answer? Is there a God we can trust, who knows what the future holds, who can guide us safely through our fears and doubts? Or is our only course of action to sit tight, bolt the door, and hope that the next disaster or scare or quake doesn't hit our lives?

There is a book that claims to have a better answer. It's a message that, if true, means that we don't have to lead lives of worry and uncertainty. It says that there's more at work in our world than just what our bleak newscasts and doomsday preachers trumpet. Are you willing to hear it for yourself?
